The caliga stands out as one of the most iconic forms of Roman footwear and is strongly linked with soldiers of the 1st century AD. Its peak of popularity falls within the early Imperial period; however, archaeological evidence suggests that this type of shoe gradually disappeared from common use by the late 1st century AD, as indicated by the dating of the latest surviving fragments.

Excavations at Vindolanda, along Hadrian’s Wall, reveal later footwear types that may reflect an evolutionary continuation of the caliga’s design. Nevertheless, fully developed caligae themselves are absent from the subsequent archaeological layers.

Construction & Materials

  • Leather:
    Vegetable-tanned leather
    Thickness approx. 4.5–5 mm

  • Sole construction:
    Characteristic three-layer construction:

    • inner sole,

    • middle layer (which also forms the base of the upper),

    • outer sole.

This structure provides durability, stability, and long service life.

  • Upper:
Formed from comparatively narrow leather straps
Encloses the foot up to above the ankles, ensuring ventilation and secure fit

  • Heel construction:
Distinctive double heel seam, a hallmark of caligae
Often reinforced or covered with protective leather strips

  • Decorative elements:
Many examples feature narrow decorative leather strips
Cut at the same time and from the same piece of leather as the upper

  • Craftsmanship:
    Fully handmade using traditional techniques

Historical Context

Apart from one-piece shoe constructions such as cabatina or campagus, caligae are unique in consistently displaying a reinforced double heel seam. Their open, strap-based design made them well suited for long marches and varied terrain, which explains their popularity among Roman soldiers during the early Imperial period.

Intended Use

  • Roman military reenactment
