Roman Focale

Hand-Made Wool Scarf for Roman Reenactment

The focale was a woollen scarf widely used in the Roman world, particularly by soldiers. Both practical and versatile, it served as protection against cold weather and as a buffer between the neck and metal armour.

This hand-made focale is produced from natural wool and finished with small tassels. Each piece is slightly different, reflecting the availability of materials and traditional textile workmanship.

Historical Context & Use

Wearing a focale is considered a necessity for every Roman legionary reenactor for two primary reasons:

Thermal protection
Wool provides effective insulation, especially in cold and windy conditions. Focales are clearly visible in Roman military funerary art, including long examples shown on soldiers’ tombstones.

Protection from armour
The focale protected the neck from direct contact with metal armour. Numerous sculptural depictions show soldiers wearing scarves around the edges of their loricae, often tied lower than a modern scarf and sometimes extending onto the chest.

Such usage can be observed, among others, on reliefs from Trajan’s Column, where Roman heavy infantrymen are depicted with scarves integrated into their armour setup.

Notes on Interpretation

Some scholars have suggested that single-colour military scarves may have indicated unit identity (for example, blue for naval units). While this theory cannot be conclusively verified, literary sources confirm that scarves were valued elements of Roman civilian dress as well—often long, decorative, and made from costly materials.
