Interpreted Roman Military Leather Bag

The Locvllvs bag is one of the most debated elements of Roman military equipment. For decades, an object depicted in Roman reliefs — most notably on Trajan’s Column — has been widely interpreted as a leather bag carried by legionaries and suspended from a furca, the wooden frame used to transport personal equipment.

Later scholarly discussions suggested alternative interpretations, proposing that the object might represent a container for grain or possibly for water or wine. However, no definitive conclusion has ever been reached, and the question remains open.

This reconstruction follows the traditional and most widely recognised interpretation: a functional leather bag forming part of a legionary’s field equipment.

Interpretation & Aesthetics

Regardless of its precise original function, this object has become one of the most recognisable visual symbols of the Roman legionary. As such, the Locvllvs bag occupies a unique place between archaeology, interpretation, and living history.

Our version is designed as a comfortable, stylish, and visually convincing piece of usable leatherwork, suitable both for reenactment and for broader presentations of Roman material culture.
