Comacchio Bag – Fully Dyed Version

Iconic Roman Leather Bag Reconstruction

The Comacchio bag is one of the most iconic surviving examples of Roman leather craftsmanship. Exceptionally well preserved, it was recovered from the wreck of a Roman merchant ship near Comacchio and remains one of the very few Roman leather artefacts preserved in such condition.

Today, the original artefact can be admired at the Museo Delta Antico. Having studied the original on multiple occasions, this reconstruction is based directly on observable construction techniques and material solutions used by Roman craftsmen.

This version differs from the standard model in one key aspect: the entire bag is fully dyed, offering a more visually striking appearance while remaining historically grounded.

Construction & Techniques

The original Comacchio bag was made from relatively thin leather, approximately 1–1.2 mm thick. To ensure durability, Roman craftsmen applied several structural solutions:

  • folding the leather in high-stress areas, especially around strap attachment points,

  • reinforcing the edges with stitched leather binding (piping).

All of these construction techniques have been faithfully reproduced in this dyed version.

Fully Dyed Finish – Colour Options

In this variant, the bag is entirely coloured after construction, including all visible leather surfaces.

  • Available in multiple colour options

  • Dyed using techniques suitable for vegetable-tanned leather

  • Colour intensity and tone may vary slightly, reflecting hand-finishing and traditional dyeing processes

This version allows for a more individual appearance while still fitting Roman military and civilian contexts, where coloured leather items are attested both archaeologically and iconographically.

Fabrica Cacti Versions

Depending on intended use and preference, we offer:

  • bags made from thin leather, closely matching the archaeological original,

  • bags made from slightly thicker leather, providing increased durability for intensive use.

We typically use high-quality cow leather.

On request:

  • specific colour selection,

  • dyed edge bindings,

  • minor custom adjustments.

Intended Use

  • Roman civilian impressions

  • Living history and museum education
