Caligae – Castleford / Lagentium Type
Available on backorder
Roman Military Sandals (Early–Late 1st Century AD)
These caligae are based on archaeological finds from Castleford, known in antiquity as Lagentium. The material originates from a trench dated to the early 70s AD through approximately 86 AD, placing these shoes firmly within the later part of the 1st century AD.
Our reconstruction is made from vegetable-tanned leather approximately 5 mm thick, ensuring durability, structural stability, and a close correspondence to robust Roman military footwear.
What makes the Castleford caligae particularly distinctive is the position of the ridge formed by the upper straps once the shoe is laced. Unlike earlier or more canonical caliga types, this ridge lies clearly toward the inner side of the foot, resulting in noticeably different strap lengths on the inner and outer sides of the shoe
Design & Typological Significance
This asymmetrical strap arrangement sets the Castleford caligae apart from better-known examples from:
-
Mainz (Germany)
-
Qasr Ibrim (Egypt)
In those cases, the strap layout tends to be more symmetrical. The off-centre ridge seen at Castleford represents a distinct typological development, rather than a manufacturing anomaly.
Notably, this feature corresponds well with the dating of the finds. Similar off-centre strap ridges appear in other footwear from the last quarter of the 1st century AD, such as:
-
the Vindolanda Calceus,
-
the Köln Calceus No. 12.
This recurring design element may therefore reflect a short-lived fashion trend in Roman footwear during this period.
Interpretation
Rather than being purely functional, the shifted ridge and uneven strap lengths likely represent a deliberate stylistic choice, illustrating how Roman military footwear was not static but responsive to changing tastes and regional preferences.
These Castleford caligae thus combine:
-
solid military construction,
-
clear archaeological grounding,
-
and a subtle but telling glimpse into Roman fashion of the late 1st century AD.
