Brass lorica manicae
Lorica Manica
Roman Armoured Limb Protection
Manicae were arm protections occasionally worn by Roman soldiers, particularly in situations requiring additional defence against heavy cutting weapons. Our reconstruction of the lorica manica is based on archaeological finds and iconographic evidence, combining historical accuracy with functional performance.
Fabrica Cacti offers two versions of this armoured limb protection:
-
Brass-segment manica
-
Steel-segment manica
Each piece is individually tailored to the customer’s required length and fit.
Construction & Materials
Metal Segments
-
Laminated construction using 0.5 mm brass or steel strips
-
Designed to replicate historical lamellar or segmented arm protection
Internal Structure
-
Straps joined by leather bands, riveted to the inner surface
-
Flexible connections allowing unrestricted movement
-
Interior padding made from thin goatskin or vegetable-tanned leather for comfort
Fastening System
-
Secured with leather straps and brass buckles
-
Adjustable fit for stability during movement and combat
Functional Design
-
Designed to be worn on the right arm only, the arm most exposed in close combat
-
Protects forearm and upper arm
-
Extended hand guard reaching into the middle of the hand area
-
Allows free and effective use of a gladius while maintaining protection
After extensive practical testing, this model has proven to be highly suitable for hand-to-hand combat reenactment. The flexible construction ensures a wide range of motion without sacrificing defensive coverage.
Historical Context
Armoured arm guards were known in both Hellenistic and Roman military traditions.
Archaeological Evidence
-
Fragments of brass and steel laminated armour have been discovered in Carlisle and other excavation sites.
-
Such finds were traditionally attributed to heavy cavalry (cataphractarii), though modern interpretations suggest usage by heavy infantry as well.
Iconographic Evidence
-
A prominent depiction appears on the Tropaeum Traiani, where legionaries are shown wearing manicae in combat against Dacian falx-wielders.
It is worth noting that even in modern fencing, without shields, injuries are most commonly centered on the right forearm and hand — underscoring the practical logic behind this form of protection.
