Reconstruction Based on Valkenburg Findings

In the Roman world, leather bags were an essential part of a legionary’s equipment, used both on the march and within stationary camps. One particularly important archaeological discovery is an almost complete fragment of a leather bag found in Valkenburg.

This reconstruction is based on the preserved elements of that find and on modern archaeological research, offering a rare insight into the everyday material culture of Roman soldiers.

Construction & Materials

  • Leather:
    Vegetable-tanned cow leather
    Thickness approx. 1.2 mm

  • Stitching:
    Entirely hand-stitched using linen thread
Visible stitch marks reflect details observed in the original Valkenburg find

  • Construction:
    No machine sewing
    Traditional leatherworking techniques throughout

Design & Function

  • Shape:
    Rectangular form

  • Use:
Likely intended for use in stationary camps, rather than for marching
Suitable for storing valuable textiles such as tunics or cloaks, as well as personal belongings

This form suggests a practical storage function, protecting garments and equipment when not in active use.

Colour & Customisation

  • The bag is available with selectable colours of leather applications

  • Colour intensity and tone may vary due to hand-dyeing and traditional finishing methods

Custom details are available on request.
