Roman Calcei Shoes – Durability and Authenticity

Calcei are closed leather shoes commonly worn by Romans during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Used both in military service and civilian life, they combined practicality, comfort, and remarkable durability. This model is a faithful leather reproduction of calcei discovered at the Roman military site of Vindolanda.

Our Vindolanda Calcei are designed with everyday use and historical accuracy in mind, reflecting footwear worn by Roman soldiers stationed along the northern frontier of the Empire, as well as by civilians across the provinces.

Product Features

Material
Crafted from high-quality vegetable-tanned cow leather, 2.3–2.5 mm thick, offering excellent durability while remaining flexible and comfortable during prolonged wear.

Sole Construction
A multi-layered leather sole reinforced with iron hobnails, providing outstanding resistance to wear and reliable grip on varied terrain, just as in archaeological originals.

Reinforcements
The heel is strengthened with tunnel stitching, increasing structural stability and extending the lifespan of the footwear.

Handmade Construction
Each pair is entirely hand-stitched using linen thread. No machines are used in the assembly process, ensuring close attention to detail and adherence to historical techniques.

Historical Notes

These calcei are made from light beige tinted leather and feature iron hobnails arranged in patterns consistent with archaeological finds. Such footwear was widely used by Roman soldiers but was equally common in civilian contexts throughout the Empire.

A functional, historically grounded reconstruction for those who value accuracy, durability, and honest craftsmanship.
