Iconic Roman Leather Bag Reconstruction

The Comacchio bag is one of the most iconic leather artefacts in the world of Roman historical reenactment. Exceptionally well preserved, it was discovered in the wreck of a Roman merchant ship near Comacchio and remains one of the very few surviving examples of Roman leatherwork in such condition.

Today, the original can be admired at the Museo Delta Antico – Comacchio. Having had the opportunity to study the artefact in person on several occasions, we base this reconstruction directly on observable construction techniques used in the original.

Construction & Techniques

The original bag was made from relatively thin leather, approximately 1–1.2 mm thick. To reinforce the structure:

  • the leather was folded in key stress areas, especially around the strap attachment points,

  • the edges were protected with a stitched leather binding (piping).

These construction solutions have been faithfully reproduced in our versions.

Fabrica Cacti Versions

Depending on personal preference and intended use, we offer:

  • bags made from thin leather, closely matching the archaeological original,

  • bags made from slightly thicker leather, offering increased durability for intensive use.

We typically use high-quality cow leather.

On request:

  • edge bindings can be dyed,

  • minor custom adjustments are possible.

Intended Use

  • Roman military and civilian reenactment

  • Living history and museum education

  • Camp and event use

  • Collectible reconstruction of a unique Roman artefact

The Comacchio bag is not just a practical accessory, but a direct link to Roman material culture — a rare combination of archaeology, craftsmanship, and everyday ancient life.
