Lorica Segmentata Corbridge B

Tinned Roman Segmental Armour with Brass Edges

The Corbridge B type represents a developed variant of early Roman segmental armour used during the 1st century AD. While closely related to the Corbridge A form, this version reflects structural refinements observed in the archaeological material, particularly in the internal fastening and articulation system.

This reconstruction is based on finds from Corbridge and follows historically grounded interpretations of Roman armour construction, offering both functionality and accuracy.

Sizing & Fit

Each lorica segmentata is custom-made to the client’s measurements.

  • Armour proportions are individually adjusted to the wearer’s body.

  • Designed to distribute weight evenly and maintain mobility.

  • Suitable for prolonged wear during reenactment and demonstrations.

Weight:
Total weight depends on the final size of the armour and varies accordingly.

Corbridge A vs Corbridge B – Key Differences

While both variants originate from the same archaeological context, there are notable constructional distinctions:

  • Corbridge A
An earlier configuration featuring a more complex internal fastening system and plate articulation, representing the initial development stage of segmental armour.

  • Corbridge B
A refined variant with simplified and reorganized internal leather connections, improving ease of assembly, maintenance, and overall usability while retaining full protective function.

These differences suggest an evolutionary process in Roman armour design rather than a radical redesign.

Historical Accuracy

This reconstruction follows the Corbridge B type, reflecting adjustments in internal construction while preserving the segmented steel plate system characteristic of early lorica segmentata. The use of 1 mm mild steel mirrors the averaged thickness identified in archaeological material rather than modern overbuilt reproductions.
