This Roman legionary scutum represents a functional and historically grounded reconstruction of the iconic Roman shield used from the late Republic through the middle Imperial period. Its form and construction reflect solutions developed by the Roman army to combine strength, protection, and maneuverability on the battlefield.

The design is inspired by archaeological finds from Dura-Europos, Vindonissa, and Carnuntum, refined through years of practical use and testing.

Core Materials

  • Standard version made from birch plywood

  • Optional version using layered wooden strips for increased authenticity and closer adherence to ancient construction methods

Edge Finish

  • Brass edging, secured with small circular rivets, based on finds from Vindonissa and Carnuntum

  • Alternatively finished with parchment (rawhide), glued or sewn, offering a lighter and more traditional appearance

  • All ornaments hand-painted

  • Motifs may follow historical patterns inspired by Dura Europos and other iconographic sources

  • Standard: acrylic paints

  • Optional: traditional casein (milk-based) paints for increased historical accuracy
