Wax Tablet Container

Roman Leather Bag for Writing Tablets

This wax tablet container is a small leather bag inspired by an archaeological leather find from Vindonissa. According to published interpretations, it was most likely used as a container for writing tablets, and its dimensions correspond well with several wax tablets recovered from the site.

The bag is entirely handmade, using traditional leatherworking techniques and materials consistent with Roman-period craftsmanship.

Construction & Materials

  • Leather:
    Vegetable-tanned leather

  • Manufacture:
    Fully hand-stitched
    No machine sewing

  • Edges:
Reinforced with stitched leather piping (edge binding) for durability

  • Finish:
Clean, functional form reflecting archaeological inspiration

Design & Interpretation

The original Vindonissa find lacks clear evidence of a carrying system. Any means of suspension or attachment were most likely connected to now-missing side panels. It is therefore equally plausible that the container was:

  • carried inside a larger bag, or

  • used as a protective container rather than a standalone carry bag.

An almost identical leather piece was also discovered at Vindolanda, further supporting this interpretation and highlighting the widespread use of similar leather containers within the Roman military world.

Colour Options

  • Available in various leather colours

  • Colour tones may vary slightly due to hand-dyeing and traditional finishing methods
