Construction Details
  • Dimensions and Thickness:
    • Thickness: 7 mm
    • Height: 110 cm
    • Width: 84 cm
  • Materials:
    • Made from birch plywood, with an option for layered strips for increased authenticity and durability.
  • Edge Finish:
    • Edges reinforced with brass (based on finds from Vindonissa and Carnuntum), secured by small circular rivets.
    • Alternatively, edges can be finished with parchment, glued or sewn for a lighter, more traditional appearance.
  • Central Features:
    • Handle: A central horizontal grip made from strong wood, preferably oak, designed to withstand significant pressure during use.
    • Umbo (Boss): Made from 1.5 mm thick steel sheet, crafted by skilled contractors. Can be attached separately or mounted directly on the shield.
  • Surface Design:
    • Covered with glued linen and adorned with hand-painted ornaments.
    • Motifs can be historically accurate, inspired by Dura Europos and other iconographic sources, or customized based on the client’s preferences.
  • Paint Options:
    • Acrylic paint by default, with an option for “milk paints” based on casein for a more authentic finish.
  • Weight:
    • Approximately 7.5 kg, optimized for functionality and ease of use.

Historical Inspiration and Experience

This functional scutum is inspired by archaeological finds from Dura Europos, Vindonissa, and Carnuntum, with adaptations informed by over 15 years of reenactment experience. Its design is both practical for battle reenactments and visually stunning for displays.
