Welzheim Calcei

Roman Ladies’ Shoes – Calcei (Welzheim Type)

This reconstruction represents elegant Roman calcei believed to have been worn by noble Roman women. The model is based on archaeological finds from a well in Welzheim (Germany), where several well-preserved shoes were discovered. These finds date to the mid-2nd to early 3rd century AD.

A comparable burial from Martres-de-Veyre in France — dated to the late 2nd century — revealed a young woman interred wearing a woolen tunic, knee-high stockings, and very similar footwear. Together, these finds provide valuable insight into female dress and leather craftsmanship in the High Roman Empire.

Construction & Materials

  • Material: Soft, high-quality vegetable-tanned cowhide

  • Finish: Natural leather that can be dyed using leather dyes (optional coloring available)

  • Techniques: Multiple historical shoemaking techniques are applied, including tunnel stitching, ensuring both durability and authenticity

  • Handcrafted: Each pair is entirely hand-stitched

The careful application of traditional stitching methods reflects Roman shoemaking practices, where structural seams were often hidden within the leather layers for strength and elegance.

Character & Use

These shoes combine refinement and practicality. They are suitable for:

  • Roman female reenactment (2nd–3rd century AD)

  • Living history and museum presentations

  • Historically inspired costume work

With their elegant form and historically grounded construction, these calcei offer a refined yet durable footwear option for portraying women of higher social status in the Roman world.

A subtle but powerful expression of Roman craftsmanship and feminine elegance.
