Roman Wool Hooded Cloak (Stitched on the Front)

The paenula was a widely used Roman outer garment, serving as protection against wind and cold. This sleeveless, poncho-like cloak with an integrated hood was worn across all social classes, from civilians and travellers to soldiers.

Our paenula is a hand-made reconstruction based on Roman textile traditions, produced entirely from wool and sewn exclusively by hand using needle and thread.

Historical Context & Use

Paenulae were commonly worn throughout the Roman period by people of all social backgrounds. They were particularly popular among travellers, rural populations, and soldiers due to their practicality and weather resistance.

The garment was primarily used as protection against wind and cold. Archaeological and literary evidence suggests that paenulae were predominantly made from thick wool, sometimes with an additional outer layer of thin leather to improve resistance to rain and harsh conditions.
